Foreign Language Examination

Eligibility
Master's and Doctoral students who have completed at least one semester of study
Language to be tested
Primary foreign language (for all departments): English
Secondary foreign language (for required departments only): Doctoral Degree Programs of Dept. of Aesthetics and Art History, Dept. of Environmental Engineering
※For the secondary foreign language, students can choose one from Japanese, Chinese, Chinese Character, French, German, Spanish, Arabic, or Russian language.
How to apply
Go to 종합정보시스템 (Comprehensive Information System)→ Log in → Click on Exams → Apply for Foreign Language Examination.
※Students who wish to re-take the exam shall visit the Graduate School office in person. (exam fee: 20,000 won)

Waiver for Foreign Language Examination
- Required documents to submit: A Foreign Language Examination Waiver Application Form (Foreign Language Test Score Report, Completion of Language Courses from Chosun University Language Education Institute, and Certificate of Degree Completion)
- Submission period: within the specific period designated to apply for Foreign Language Examination
- Required documents to submit: A Foreign Language Examination Waiver Application Form (Foreign Language Test Score Report, Completion of Language Courses from Chosun University Language Education Institute, and Certificate of Degree Completion)
- Submission location: The Graduate School office
Waiver is applicable to
- Students who have earned a minimum of the following scores over the past two years starting from the first day of a semester: TOEFL (PBT 490, CBT 163, IBT 57), TOEIC 600, NEW TEPS 223, or IELTS 5.0.
- Students who take language courses in the Language Education Institute and meet the following requirements:
① Completion of Level-based English Conversation Level 3 and above or English Conversation Intensive Course Intermediate-High and above, or
② Completion of one-to-one or customized courses equivalent to the level of sub-paragraph. - Foreign students who have earned TOPIK Grade 4 and higher over the past two years starting from the first day of a semester (However, Department of Korean Language and Literature, Department of Korean Language Education, and Dept. of Literature and Creation require TOPIK Grade 6 and higher.)
※Students who do not pass the Foreign Language Examination are not entitled to degree completion and shall enroll in another semester with payment of 1/6 of tuition fees.
Doctoral Degree Entrance Examination for Integrated Master's and Doctoral Degree Programs

Examination subjects
Students can select three types from the courses that they have already taken in their department.
Pass criteria
A minimum passing score is 70 or above.
- Pass: Only students who pass the exam are admitted to a Doctoral Degree Program in the next semester.
- Fail: Students who fail the exam are admitted to a Master's Degree Program and awarded a Master's degree when the requirements for degree completion are fulfilled.

Comprehensive Examination Eligibility
1. Master's Degree Program
① Students who have passed the primary Foreign Language Examination and
② Students who have completed or are expected to complete 24 credits or above (with a GPA of 3.0 and higher)
2. Doctoral Degree Program
① (Department of Aesthetics and Art History) Students who have passed the primary and secondary Foreign language Examination
② Students who have completed 36 credits or above (with a GPA of 3.0 and higher)
③ (Integrated Master's and Doctoral Degree Program) Students who have acquired 60 or above (with a GPA of 3.0 and higher)

- Students shall submit an application for Comprehensive Examination to their department head. - Before submission, students shall consult with their department head to determine test subjects. - Master's degree: Students shall select three types from the courses they have already taken in their field of study (Supplementary units are excluded) - Doctoral degree: Students shall select four types from the courses (Concentration) they already have taken in their field of study (Supplementary units are excluded) - The number of courses instructed by one professor shall be no more than two. |
2 | Entry of Comprehensive Examination plan into the system [Department Head] | - Comprehensive Information System for Professors→ Education → Comprehensive Examination Management & Dissertation Research → Entry of a comprehensive examination plan (test subjects) into the system The department head shall enter test subjects indicated on the applications submitted by students. |
3 | Application for Comprehensive Examination [Students] |
- Students shall apply for Comprehensive Examination. 종합정보시스템 (Comprehensive Information System)→ Log in → Click on Exams → Apply for Comprehensive Examination (Click on the types you have indicated in the application form) → Save - Only after the test subjects are entered by department head can students apply for the Comprehensive Examination during a scheduled application period. |
4 | Comprehensive Examination & assessment [Department] | - After an application period closes, each department shall receive a list of applicants and examination paper prepared by the Graduate School, and conduct a comprehensive examination on a scheduled date. -The minimum passing score in each test subject shall be 70 or higher out of 100. (The result is recognized per subject) |
